Science is no stranger to controversy. The pursuit of discovery, of knowledge, is often uncomfortable and disconcerting. I have never been one to shy away from stating what I believe to be the truth, however difficult it might prove to be. This has, at times, got me in hot water.
Rarely more so than right now, where I find myself at the centre of a storm of criticism. I can understand much of this reaction. For if I said what I was quoted as saying, then I can only admit that I am bewildered by it. To those who have drawn the inference from my words that Africa, as a continent, is somehow genetically inferior, I can only apologise unreservedly. That is not what I meant. "A ciência não é estranha à controvérsia. A busca de conhecimento é freqüentemente desconfortável e desconcertante. Nunca temi declarar o que acredito ser verdade, não importando o quão difícil seja. Isso, de vez em quando, me deixa em maus lençóis. Raras vezes mais do que agora, em que me encontro no centro de uma tempestade. Entendo boa parte da reação. Porque se eu disse o que escreveram que disse, então só me resta admitir que estou perplexo. Para aqueles que inferiram das minhas palavras que a África, como um continente, é, de alguma forma, geneticamente inferior, só me resta pedir desculpas públicas. Não foi o que eu quis dizer. Mais importante, do meu ponto de vista, não há base científica para tal crença. Sempre fui um feroz defensor da posição de que devemos basear nossa visão do mundo em fatos. Por isso a genética é tão importante. Porque nos leva a respostas para muitas das maiores e mais difíceis questões. »

A vida de Watson e a historia de CSHL sao muito polemicas. Ja era tempo para o Watson se reformar, ja no inicio dos anos 90 comentarios semelhantes levarao ao seu afastamento do Human Genome Project, um project global, dependente de colaboracoes e boa vontade. O CSHL tem o futuro pela frente, uma instituicao de grande prestigio e visao.
